Tea And Weight Loss
Researchers at an Australian university believe that a simple cup of tea could hold the key to weight loss.
The scientists at the University of Queensland made the discovery by accident while they were testing the brew in their laboratory.
Professor Lindsay Brown from the university said the tea could potentially be a substantial health breakthrough.
"This is potentially one of the major advances in the control of cardio-vascular disease and cancers in this country," Professor Brown said.
The drink is based on green tea and has oil of spearmint, olive leaf and anti-oxidants added.
After a three year program of research, the results of tests on laboratory rats have been nothing short of astounding, the scientists say.
One group of rats was fed junk food, forcing their blood pressure and weight up to alarming levels. The rats were then fed the tea while continuing on the junk diet, and after two months their blood pressure and weight went back to normal.

The researchers are currently conducting trials on human obesity. One trial subject says he has lost around 3kg after three weeks on the tea.
But pharmaceutical experts have warned against expecting too much from a simple tea
"The important thing for us all to realise is that theres no quick fix when it comes to weight management," the Pharmaceutical Society's John Bell said.
"You have to exercise and have a healthy lifestyle and i dont think you can replace those things with a cup of tea."
Green tea and weight loss have been in the news recently as one of the newest ways to help shed pounds and keep them off. Teas have been touted for years as an antioxidant rich drink; now, the green variety has shown promise in the search for the ultimate weight loss drug. Green tea is made by picking tea leaves and drying them instead of fermenting them. The fermentation process (which is used in making black tea) destroys catechins with antioxidant properties called epigallocatechin gallate (ECGC). When ECGC is combined with caffeine (found naturally in tea or as an additive), the effect is said to raise the potential for fat burning. Green tea also has other beneficial uses. It contains antioxidants that fight cancer, heart diseases, stroke, and other health problems. Because of its powerful properties, research is being done to see whether or not it has weight loss potential.
Green tea is considered an herbal remedy. Therefore, it is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Due to this fact, most experts recommend that green tea should be ingested as an extract or by drinking the tea. Patches, supplements, pills and combinations with other herbal remedies should not be used due to lack of regulation.
Several cups (upwards of five to six) can be taken a day. However, if experiencing side effects due to caffeine, cut back or quit drinking the tea. Even if green tea and weight loss are not shown to be linked, the numerous other benefits of green tea are not without merit, and health may be improved regardless.
